Concept Visualization for Dipper Shoes Advertizing

Create a visual concept for a commerical photograph that dramatically shows Dipper Shoes in an eye catching way.

Together with Boy Bastiaens I created a visual in a stylized way that immediately catches the eye. The goal was to convey a dramatical and theatrical staging where, via limited tones and guided lighting, the eye is gradually moved toward the shoes. Much like an early 1900's poster.
I started out with a stock 3D human character but wanted to downplay any of the 'stockishness' of the model. So I started a series of 3D renders and simply cut and pasted elements in Photoshop to arrive exactly at the posture and attitude that needed to be conveyed.
The background would show dozens of little bird house that were going to be provided by a collector. I quickly created some simple stand-ins from some reference photographs and added a range of these houses as background elements.

I first tested some more or less photorealistic approaches but on Boy Bastiaens' suggestions I gradually made the image more and more graphical in nature.
